Cogumelos | Filipa Won

One day a client asked me for a small circle rug, it would have to be perfect. Tired of the monotony of the perfect circle rugs or the perfect 90° angles and being a lover of all that is imperfect because it is so human, I started a new "Transformation" of the classic Arraiolos rugs by designing an organic line.

The Cogumelos (Portuguese for mushrooms) carpet consists of a rug embroidered in Arraiolos stitch. The embroidery is done on jute fabric with sheep's wool thread. Around 110,000 stitches were embroidered by hand using not only traditional stitches of Arraiolos embroidery, but also tricot stitches and the flower stitch, a modification, created by me, of the traditional Arraiolos embroidery technique. The design started as an abstract design, only after a Transformation path, I reached the final design.

Materials: Arraiolos Wool
